CLIENT: MINT MUSE OFFERING: UX / UI DESIGN
Mint Muse's sound app product, Sound Level Meter Pro (SLM Pro), is an iPhone app that help people to measure the sound levels. It can not only get an accurate sound levels reading, but also take a snapshot as the visual reference and save as a record or share with friends.
Because SLM Pro is a utility app for users with audio relative knowlege, the objective was to provide a quick way to check sound level reading by their phone instead of real sound level meter while still have the flexibilty to choose the particular weighting filter and fast/slow detector response.
We began by interviewing users and testing feature concepts to inform and inspire the design process. We learned that while users with relative knowlege have the needs to know what their envirement sound level is, they still don't want to spent too much time to learn how the app works. Accordingly, while user value the reading and features from SLM pro, they need intuitive, clear, and simple guidance in order to shorten the learning curve of the app.
These observations about users are reflected in Bing’s design of SLM pro. The app offers users clear overlaid guideline when they open the app first time, helping them quickly get to know the app, then get an accurate measurement result.
To enable effectively use, we put all three main feature in the bottom tap bar. The design of center scale wheel not only provide the sound level range by measuring, but also to a part of different weight standards that user can swipe right or left to switch the weighting. All three main features are centered in the middle of screen with rapid and responsive motion design, make interfaces feel natural. From the record list, user can check their record history with visual cue of snapshot and share them by email with .csv file and screen shot.
Available on the App Store.
